We’re already into November, and it’s time to start thinking about getting a Christmas tree (if that’s one of the ways you celebrate the holiday season). Utah is filled with fantastic places to cut your own tree, both from farms and in the wild.
If you’ve never done it before, it’s a fun, festive adventure you should try at least once. Who knows? It might just become one of your favorite holiday traditions.
In the Wild
Few things are more magical than heading into the forest, cutting down a tree, and bringing it home and decorating it. Here are some places where you can do just that.
Ashley National Forest
You can get a permit starting on November 15th, and all permits cost $15. Here are the locations where you can buy a permit:
- Ashley National Forest Services Office
- Davis Jubilee in Vernal
- Lapoint County Store in Lapoint
- Hanna Country Store in Hanna
- Stewarts Thriftway in Roosevelt
- The Manila Forest Service Office
- The Green River Forest Service Office
- Flaming Gorge Resort
Trees you cut down can be up to 15 feet tall and there is a limit of one tree per household. See more information here.
Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest
Heber-Kamas Ranger District
Permits go on sale on November 4, and there are more than double the number of available permits this year—4,500. However, you may purchase only one permit per household. Stop by one of the following locations to purchase your permit for $15:
- Heber Ranger District Office
- Silver Eagle in Heber
- Kamas Ranger District Office
- Mirror Lake Service in Kamas
All subalpine fir, white fir, and lodgepole pine trees 20 feet or shorter may be cut down and removed with this permit. See more information here.
Evanston/Mt. View Ranger Districts
Permits go on sale on November 18 and will cost $15. You may purchase a permit (one per household) at:
- Evanston Ranger District Office
- View Ranger District Office
- Last Chance Gas Station in Evanston
- Bear River Lodge in Kamas
Trees must be 20 feet or shorter, but any species of tree may be cut. See more information here.
Spanish Fork Ranger District
Permits go on sale on November 7 at the Spanish Fork Ranger District Office. Permits are $15, and there is a limit of one per household.
Pinyon pine and juniper trees that are 20 feet and less may be cut and removed. See more information here.
Salt Lake Bureau of Land Management
Permits for trees on BLM land are sold beginning on November 5 for $10 each. You may buy two permits per household to cut down juniper and pinyon pine trees only.

From the Farm
There aren’t many places to cut down your own tree from a farm in Utah, but there a few wonderful places you can go.
Meldrum Christmas Tree Farm
The Meldrum Christmas Tree Farm has a large variety of trees, including Colorado Spruce, Black Hills Spruce, Scotch Pine, Austrian Pine, and White Fir. Most trees are under seven feet tall, though they do have a few that 12 feet and taller.
The price for trees varies from $50 to $125.
Opens on November 29th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (usually open on Saturdays afterwards)

Beck Christmas Tree Farm
Beck Christmas Tree Farm is in a lovely setting in Alpine. They’re typically open on weekends, but check their Facebook page for information about this year.

Robinson’s Tree Farm
Robinson’s Tree Farm has beautiful Colorado Spruce and Alpine Fir (6 to 14 feet) and is just your good old-fashioned Christmas tree farm. Call (801) 876-3190 for more information.
